Identity Theft Awareness & the Business Community Presented by: Master Police Officer (ret.) Dave Lewis-Jones Lenexa Police Department
Dave is a Master Police officer (retired) from the Lenexa Police Department. Dave’s last assignment was with Special Operations Section, Directed Patrol Unit-Community Policing/Crime Prevention Office. Other previous assignments were Detective/Detective Supervisor total for 11 years, negotiator for tactical squad, regional Police Academy Instructor for 17 years, and Team Leader for the Crisis Intervention Team.
The program will first cover general identity theft awareness: learning what identity theft is, how information is stolen, and how to minimize your risk. The second portion of the program will cover identity theft and the business community. This includes the business impact of identity theft, the impact on victims, how to work with the victims and how to minimize economic and reputation damage to the company related to identity fraud.
When someone steals your identity you have serious problems. Suddenly, you’re on the defensive in that job interview, rental application, or loan approval that you thought would be a breeze. Unfortunately, you might not know that identity theft has happened until it's too late.
An identity thief, armed with just a few pieces of information - credit card number, social security number, driver’s license number, date of birth - might open an account in your name, change the mailing address, then run up charges on the account. You're completely in the dark that the identity fraud happened.
